Changes are on the way in how employers may apply for consent to carry out specified practices under regulation 7 of the Ionising Radiations Regulations (IRR 2017), according to the U.K. Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
The new application process for consent will be introduced in April 2023. Employers requiring consent from HSE will need to submit a safety assessment and will be inspected before consent is granted. Existing consents remain valid until they are due for renewal but then the new application process will be applied, HSE said.
The Society for Radiological Protection (SRP) noted that charges for consent and certification are expected to rise considerably and plans to offer a workshop on the new system. Nuclear medicine service managers are encouraged to attend, the SRP said.
