A senior ob/gyn specialist who works for one of the top hospitals in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is to be struck off from the U.K. medical register for misconduct. The news broke at the same time as a major radiology event designed to forge closer links between the U.K. and UAE took place in Dubai.
A tribunal held by the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) between 26 and 29 September recommended that Dr. Amitabha Majumdar be removed from the register. Full details about the erasure are to be published shortly, and there will be an opportunity for an appeal, according to the MPTS website.
Majumdar is a consultant obstetrician and gynecologist (with specialist training in urogynaecology) and associate chief medical officer for Women's and Children at King's College Hospital Dubai.
He graduated in medicine in 1994 from the University of Rajasthan, Jaipur, India. He then completed a U.K. Certificate of Training (CCT) in ob/gyn and was the specialty lead in the University Hospital of South Manchester. He also worked as lead urogynecologist and chief of gynecology at the Corniche Hospital in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
Majumdar is currently based at the Dubai Hills Hospital and the Dubai Jumeirah Clinic. His biography on the hospital website lists his areas of expertise as early and high-risk pregnancy, urinary incontinence, prolapse of uterus and vagina, premalignant conditions of the cervix, chronic pelvic pain, endometriosis, fibroid uterus, premature ovarian failure, ovarian cysts, and menopause.
The King's College Hospital London in Dubai Hills opened in 2019, and it is a joint venture with Al Tayer Group, Dubai Investments, and U.K.-based Ashmore Group.

Over 45% of the doctors and the entire senior nursing staff (comprising 30% of the total number of nurses) are trained in the U.K., according to a press release issued when the Dubai Hills hospital was inaugurated by the Deputy Ruler of Dubai.
The hospital specializes in five core areas: pediatrics, cardiology, orthopedics, ob/gyn, and metabolic diseases. The three other King's facilities in the UAE include a medical and surgical training center in Abu Dhabi, a medical center in Jumeirah, and another center in the marina, which opened in September 2018.
Many U.K. radiologists were in Dubai last week for the Royal College of Radiologists' Global Congress. The meeting was developed in partnership with the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) and in collaboration with the Radiology Society of the Emirates (RSE) and the Pan Arab Association of Radiological Societies (PAARS). It focused on how radiology drives innovation.
