The U.K.'s Royal College of Radiologists (RCR) and the Society of Radiographers (SoR) have issued a statement regarding patients who need a CT or MRI exam with contrast and are breastfeeding.
The statement reiterates 2019 guidance from the RCR, which notes that breastfeeding women do not need to stop breastfeeding before the exam. The statement also refers to advice released by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) that supports the position that stopping breastfeeding after contrast imaging or discarding breast milk is not necessary.
"It is the view of both the RCR and the SoR that patients who wish to continue breastfeeding after being administered with contrast agent -- usually given in advance of a CT or MRI scan -- should be able to do so as there is no evidence of risk to the baby/child," the two organizations noted in a statement released on 21 January.
