Image-guided surgery developer Brainlab has installed its ExacTrac Dynamic radiation therapy patient positioning and monitoring system at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, U.K.

The system, which combines 4D thermal-surface camera technology with real-time x-ray tracking, enables delivery of radiotherapy and radiotherapy with submillimeter accuracy for treating cancer and other conditions, according to the institution. Addenbrooke's is the first hospital in the U.K. to receive ExacTrac Dynamic.

The development means the hospital will be able to offer stereotactic radiosurgery and stereotactic ablative radiation treatment to patients not only with non-small cell lung cancer but also those with lung, lymph node, and non-spine bone oligometastatic disease. A further enhancement planned for the future will enable staff to track and treat tumors that move or change size and shape during a course of treatment, according to Brainlab.
