The Irish national breast cancer screening program, BreastCheck, is likely to switch from the current biennial frequency to a triennial protocol, in part due to delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a report posted on 6 July by RTÉ, the national TV and radio broadcaster.
The program will not restart until September, and it will prioritize 80,000 backlogged examinations first, stated Dr. Colm Henry, chief clinical officer at the Health Service Executive.
Henry is concerned there may be a lower uptake in screening services in Ireland, as has already occurred in Gemany, Hungary, and Sweden, which was the subject of a special article by AuntMinnieEurope.com last month.
