BIR releases radiation safety advice sheets

The British Institute of Radiology (BIR) has launched a Radiation Safety initiative that involves publishing daily safety advice sheets for a week.

The initiative will begin 25 February and continue through 1 March. The advice sheets offer guidance on the following five aspects of radiation safety:

  • Radiation risks
  • Personal protective equipment
  • Keeping staff doses as low as reasonably practicable (ALARP)
  • Tips for equipment installation
  • Safety advice regarding nonmedical referrers

The sheets have been written by the BIR Radiation Safety Special Interest Group, chaired by Peter Hiles. The group includes medical physicists, radiographers, radiologists, and industry representatives.

The advice sheets will be available for download from the BIR Radiation Safety Special Interest Group webpage.
