The Royal College of Radiologists (RCR) and the British Society of Thoracic Imaging have embraced a five-year plan put forward by the British Lung Foundation's Taskforce for Lung Health to improve lung health in England
Radiologists will play a key role in this new plan, especially in the early and accurate diagnosis of lung disease and the potential implementation of a national lung cancer screening program, according to the RCR. Also included in the plan are recommendations for setting national standards for imaging report turnaround times and creating regional thoracic imaging networks for improved collaboration between hospitals.
"Early and accurate diagnosis is critical to survival rates for people with lung disease but this depends on having the skill and capacity to analyze and interpret CT scans," RCR President Dr. Nicola Strickland noted in a statement. "This can only happen when there are more clinical radiologists in post."
