AI looms large for radiology | Nikolaou's pearls from ISMRM 2018 | Debate heats up over radiographers' role

Dear AuntMinnieEurope Member,

For those working at the coalface in medical imaging, artificial intelligence (AI) probably still seems like a pretty vague and distant concept, but that's all about to change.

A host of algorithms are being assessed for use in radiology, and some of them will be used in clinical practice soon, as Dr. Neelam Dugar explains in her latest column. Read more in the Imaging Informatics Community, or click here.

AI was also a central theme at the joint congress of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and European Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and Biology. In a captivating talk, Dr. Konstantin Nikolaou from Tübingen, Germany, spelled out why he thinks multimodality, multiparametric, or complex MRI diagnoses using AI are still a long way off. Go to the MRI Community, or click here.

Last week's opinion column by Dr. Emanuele Neri about why radiographers cannot replace radiologists was our most widely read article during June, and clearly thousands of you are following our debate over role extension. Now Dr. Elisabetta Giannotti from Nottingham, U.K., has added to the discussion. Get her thoughts here.

The continued integration of augmented reality into healthcare came under scrutiny at last week's Computer Assisted Radiology and Surgery (CARS) 2018 meeting in Berlin. Researchers from New York University shared their experiences of using an augmented reality device to visualize holographic models during presurgical planning for prostate cancer patients. Discover how well it fared compared with MRI by clicking here.

Also at CARS 2018, a Dutch group demonstrated how its new technique for quantifying wrist motion using 4D CT can assist clinicians in the evaluation of bone displacement and fracture healing. Visit our Advanced Visualization Community, or click here.

Finally, our sister site, AuntMinnie.com, broke some major industry news yesterday about GE's decision to spin off GE Healthcare into a separate company. Get the full story here.
