Dear AuntMinnieEurope Member,
If you thought the Euratom radiation protection directive had already been implemented across the European Union, then you'll need to think again.
Spain failed to meet the deadline of 6 February 2018 and has still not complied, even though it's well over four years since the directive was finalized. Learn more in the CT Community, or by clicking here. Also, this topic is likely to come up at the biennial congress of the Spanish Society of Medical Radiology, which begins in Pamplona on 24 May. Look out for our live reports from the meeting over the next few days, and also follow us on our AuntMinnieEspañol Twitter account.
Evidence is increasing about the superiority of digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) in combination with 2D mammography for detecting breast cancer. To cut radiation exposure, clinicians can create 2D mammograms from tomosynthesis datasets, known as synthesized 2D mammography. German researchers are testing DBT plus synthesized 2D mammography versus standard full-field digital mammography for breast screening. Ensuring women attend regular screening sessions remains a constant challenge, as shown by our report about the worrying situation in Iran. Go to AuntMinnie Middle East, or click here.
At this month's German Radiology Congress, RöKo 2018, a group of researchers from Mannheim reported on a clinical study in which they examined 75 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease to see if the highly detailed information provided by quantitative CT could enable them to draw conclusions about lung function. What were their key findings? Find out here.
Meanwhile, fascinating new analysis has been published about the worldwide availability, use, and price of MRI. Get the full story in our MRI Community, or click here.
Mixed martial arts, or cage fighting, is a popular TV sport, and its amateur scene is growing fast too. The injuries incurred during these fights can be difficult to diagnose, as shown by this week's case report from the world-famous Mater Misericordiae University Hospital in Dublin. It contains some stunning images. Test yourself here.
