Fraunhofer MEVIS partners on radiation therapy study

The Fraunhofer Institute for Medical Image Computing (MEVIS) is part of a research team that is using CT images to explore the effect of particular cancer medicines or radiation therapy on patients. The team plans to release interim results this spring.

The 2.8 million euro radiomics project is sponsored by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and called the Patient-Oriented Oncological Therapy Assistance (PANTHER). In addition to Fraunhofer MEVIS, collaborators include the Medical Center of the University of Munich, MeVis BreastCare, and Siemens Healthineers.

Researchers will present results from the study's initial phase, for which they gathered CT image data from colon cancer and lymphoma patients and segmented relevant structures in the images using a web tool. The information helped oncologists understand patients' response to a therapy and how their blood values changed during the course of treatment, Fraunhofer MEVIS said.

The project's next stage is developing an automatic algorithm to perform the image segmentation, according to the firm.
