Warning: Spend more on radiation protection

German hospitals need to set aside more resources for radiation protection, in advance of the new law that takes effect on 18 February 2018, warns an article in the publication KMA-online. The German-language report also emphasizes the importance of increasing the role of medical physicists.

Parts of the law already came into effect earlier this month, but more prep work is required before full implementation, according to the article; for instance, recording more details on radiation exposure. Also, a medical physicist must be regularly available on the ground and in case of emergencies, according to the law. Similarly, a teleradiologist should be on hand for individual cases and emergencies. The teleradiologists' maximum allowable distance from a healthcare site has yet to be determined, however.
