The German Parliament has given its official approval to the country's first Radiological Protection Act, according to an article on the German Radiological Society (DRG) website.
The new law originates as a European Union (EU) directive, which was first published in December 2013. In general, it's proved hard to incorporate EU directives into national law, but Germany has done so with the passage of the Radiological Protection Act, the DRG said.
The act includes mandates on the introduction of individual screening, compulsory overdose notification, and the involvement of medical physics experts in x-ray diagnostics. Also, mammograms previously have been the only permitted screening technique, but the act will allow for future expansion of different modalities. It will not come into effect until the end of 2018.
