Fresh scandal breaks out over radiologist who missed cancer

A U.K. radiologist who was allowed to continue working despite having missed identifying a patient's breast cancer more than a decade ago has failed to identify the disease in another patient, according to a report published in The Independent newspaper.

In 2005, the U.K.'s General Medical Council (GMC) found Dr. Kong Fa Lan Keng Lun deficient in his care of women at St. Margaret's Hospital in Epping, where 6,000 scans he had read had to be reviewed. But the radiologist carried on working, this time at Ipswich Hospital, and failed to properly diagnose another woman in 2012, The Independent said.

The 46-year-old woman was referred to Ipswich because of pain and nipple discharge in her right breast. Lun performed a mammogram and an ultrasound, but concluded there was no abnormality, and 14 months later, the women returned to the hospital with the same symptoms and increased pain, according to the report. Lun performed another mammogram and ultrasound, and requested a biopsy -- which showed cancer.

The patient is suing Ipswich Hospital National Health Service Trust, claiming the delay in diagnosis caused serious health complications and shortened her life expectancy, The Independent said.
