Breast screening debate resurfaces; networks & future of PACS; radiographer reporting

Dear AuntMinnieEurope Member,

The fierce, long-running debate over breast screening has surfaced again. In the latest development, Norwegian researchers have reported that organized screening mammography resulted in more detected early-stage breast cancers, but no change in advanced-stage breast cancers. Screening advocate Dr. László Tabár has already highlighted the limitations of this study, however.

Well-planned imaging reporting networks can lead to notable benefits for radiologists and improvements in patient care. That's the view of Dr. Nicola Strickland, who should know about these things, having helped to mastermind the Hammersmith Hospital's pioneering PACS in West London.

In the second part of our video interview, Strickland explains why she is such an enthusiast for these networks and also looks ahead to ECR 2016 and the future of digital systems. Go to our Healthcare Informatics Community, or click here.

Radiographer reporting remains a controversial issue, so the availability of new software that can assess and monitor the interpretation skills of radiographers is bound to attract plenty of interest. For the full details, click here.

When interpreting chest CT examinations commonly encountered in daily practice, it's vital to remain vigilant and be aware of the pitfalls, according to a group of French radiologists. In their award-winning research, they have nine practical tips on how to minimize errors in chest CT. To get them, click here.

Meanwhile, German researchers have confirmed the viability of 7-tesla cardiovascular MRI to provide high-resolution images of the beating heart and subtle changes of the myocardial tissue structure in patients with abnormal thickening of the heart muscle. Click here to learn more.

Last but not least, a computer-aided ultrasound technique can be used to stage liver steatosis, or fatty liver, offering high correlation with fat measurements produced from MR spectroscopy, according to a Dutch pilot study. Visit our Advanced Visualization Community, or click here.
