Dear PACS Insider,

Remote viewing of imaging studies typically involves relying on mobile devices that naturally have smaller screens than traditional diagnostic workstations. Virtual-reality technology, however, can remove that limitation.

In a presentation at last week's RSNA 2015 meeting, a group from Evangelismos Hospital in Athens shared how their virtual-reality device makes it appear to the radiologist they are standing in front of a 175-inch mega-screen. Click here to learn how the system performed in testing for reviewing CT scans.

Our in-depth coverage of issues surrounding home reporting by radiologists in the U.K. also figures prominently in this issue.

Dr. Richard Harries may have retired as a consultant radiologist in the U.K. in 2010, but that doesn't mean he's given up on practicing radiology. Now working part-time and reporting from home, Harries reads up to 30,000 imaging studies a year. Learn about how he does it and about the benefits of home reporting for his hospital by clicking on our report from staff writer Frances Rylands-Monk.

While acknowledging that having radiologists work at home might help alleviate reporting backlogs and improve radiology service to patients, the U.K. Royal College of Radiologists (RCR) is also directing attention to some of the downsides of the practice. In a recent report, the RCR shared a detailed list of the rigorous procedures and checks it recommends for home reporting. Click here for our coverage.

The RCR is also advocating that better use be made of older radiologists, according to our article by Editor-in-Chief Philip Ward.

Now a major priority for senior management within the U.K. National Health Service (NHS), an enterprise-wide imaging strategy could help transform NHS organizations, according to a column contributed by industry expert Warren Edwards. Click here to learn why.

Meanwhile, immediate past president of the German Radiological Society, Dr. Norbert Hosten, has some interesting opinions on teleradiology and the role of the radiologist within teleradiological scenarios. Find out what he has to say by clicking here.
