Radiation therapy vendor Varian Medical Systems unveiled VitalBeam, a new radiation therapy system, at the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO) meeting in Barcelona, Spain.
VitalBeam will be available with an 80-leaf collimator for intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), low-dose megavoltage (MV) imaging using the accelerator beam for image guidance, and respiratory gating for motion management. Facilities can add RapidArc radiotherapy for faster IMRT, higher dose delivery rates, an on-board kV x-ray system capable of conebeam CT imaging, and a higher-resolution 120-leaf collimator, Varian said. All VitalBeam configurations offer up to three photon and six electron energy levels.
The system has a treatment console with a graphical interface that consolidates controls; a "follow the light" guidance system, with prompts and messages to guide therapists; and automation that reduces the number of steps needed for imaging, positioning, and treating patients.
VitalBeam will be rolled out in markets across the world as regulatory clearances are obtained, Varian said.
