Study: DEXA helps assess cardiorespiratory fitness

Using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), Finnish researchers believe they have found a way to better assess cardiorespiratory fitness.

The technique, developed at the University of Eastern Finland, uses DEXA to determine the body composition of 7- and 8-year-old children, then combines the results with an impedance method to assess lean mass.

As part of the study, children performed a maximal exercise test with a respiratory gas analysis. Cardiorespiratory fitness was then determined by reviewing exercise test results in comparison with the children's lean mass.

Details were published online on 27 August in Clinical Physiology and Functional Imaging.
