Image display firm Barco has announced that surgical firm Merivaara of Finland has selected its Nexxis technology to form part of Merivaara's OpenOR digital integrated operating room (OR).
Nexxis integrates all devices such as endoscopy cameras, computers, scanners, and surgical displays in and beyond the operating room. The Helsinki University Central Hospital will be one of the first hospitals to install Merivaara's Nexxis-enabled, OpenOR system.
The latest version of OpenOR allows hospitals to optimize the life cycle of their medical devices and schedule the capital investments without linking them to the implementation of the OR integration system. The surgical team can now choose which devices they prefer to use and gradually add functionality to the system.
Also, the fiber-based network, with its universal network cable, ensures use of mobile devices such as imaging and endoscopic instruments, as these can easily be transferred from one operating theater to another, Barco said. They can also be coupled via a single connector.
Nexxis' OR-over-IP approach will allow Merivaara to deliver high-quality imaging and ensure the distribution of uncompressed video, graphics, audio, advanced imaging, and data throughout the OR with near-zero latency.
Merivaara and Barco will showcase the latest version of its OpenOR-over-IP system and Nexxis at Medica 2013 from 20 to 23 November in Düsseldorf, Germany
