New 26-chapter book focuses on radiation safety, quality

Radiological Safety and Quality - Paradigms in Leadership -- a book resulting from multidisciplinary collaboration between experts and leaders from academic institutions, radiology practices, professional organizations, regulatory authorities, the United Nations, and international agencies -- has now been published.

The 26 chapters by 53 experts and 11 messages from international organizations and agencies convey a common message: There is no single panacea to improve safety and quality, but ongoing leadership, innovation, collaboration, and stakeholder participation are needed. The editors are Dr. Lawrence Lau, a radiologist from Melbourne, Australia, and the founding chairman of the International Radiology Quality Network, and Dr. Kwan-Hoong Ng, a professor of medical physics at the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur.

According to Springer, the publisher, established principles and new concepts, challenges and opportunities, and examples of leadership and innovations are discussed in the book to raise awareness, share experience, and facilitate development of facility-based or system-wide improvements in radiation safety, quality radiology, and patient care by procedure justification, optimization of protection, and imaging data and incident minimization.

The book is supported by Image Wisely, International Atomic Energy Agency, International Commission on Radiological Protection, the International Organization for Medical Physics, the International Radiation Protection Association, the International Radiology Quality Network, the International Society of Radiographers and Radiological Technologists, the International Society of Radiology, the Alliance for Radiation Safety in Pediatric Imaging, the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation, and the World Health Organization.
