Which medical specialties have the highest paid physicians in the U.S.? Not radiology, according to a study conducted by the physician search and consulting firm Merritt Hawkins & Associates and reported by Forbes.
Merritt Hawkins used its own data from the period April 2012 and March 2013 to calculate average starting base salaries offered to doctors and clinicians in 20 medical specialties. Orthopedic surgeons topped the list, with a starting base salary of $464,500 U.S. (349,084 euros) a year, on average.
Following were noninvasive cardiologists at $447,143; invasive cardiologists at $461,364 U.S. (346,781 euros); and gastroenterologists at $441,421 U.S. (331,791 euros), Forbes reported.
Radiologists placed eighth on the list at $368,250 U.S. (276,793 euros) per year, on average.
Merritt Hawkins & Associates' 2013 Review of Physician Recruiting Incentives will be released in full later this month, Forbes said.
