Nobel Committee gets new members

The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet announced it has appointed new members of the Nobel Committee for Physiology or Medicine.

Dr. Juleen Zierath, PhD, professor of clinical integrative physiology at Karolinska Institutet, was elected as chairman of the committee for 2013, succeeding Urban Lendahl, PhD. Thomas Perlmann, PhD, will serve as vice chairman.

Other members include Dr. Jan Andersson, PhD; Rune Toftgård, PhD; and Dr. Anna Wedell, PhD. In addition, 10 ad hoc members are selected each year to serve on the Nobel Committee to provide expertise in a variety of research areas.

Dr. Göran Hansson, PhD, will continue to serve as secretary of the committee and the Nobel Assembly, as well as director of the Medical Nobel Institute.

The Nobel Committee evaluates candidates and recommends a winner for the Nobel Prize to the Nobel Assembly. The Nobel Assembly will make its decision to award the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine on October 7, 2013.
