Optical coherence tomography paper wins award

An optical coherence tomography (OCT) paper from Dr. Giuseppina Abignano at the Leeds Musculoskeletal Biomedical Research Unit received the Abbott Innovations Award at the British Society for Rheumatology's annual conference earlier this month.

The paper, "Optical coherence tomography validation: A new quantitative imaging biomarker for affected skin in scleroderma," investigates the use of the Vivosight Topical OCT probe (Michelson Diagnostics) to assess tell-tale patterns in collagen deposits and vascularization within the top layers of the skin of scleroderma sufferers.

The study showed promise for this new quantitative approach to assessment of scleroderma and this technique may be used to tailor treatment and noninvasively provide rapid and accurate data for clinical trials, according to Michelson.
