Regulators threaten MRI; EUSOBI fact sheet; Kate Winslet's new role?

Dear AuntMinnieEurope Member,

It may seem crazy, but the threat to clinical MRI in Europe has resurfaced, and key opinion leaders met in Brussels on Tuesday night to discuss the situation. As the deadline of April 2012 starts to loom, opposition is growing to the planned EU-wide exemption for the medical use of MRI from any exposure limit values set in the Physical Agents 2004/40/EC (EMF) Directive.

Dr. Gabriel Krestin is not somebody who is prone to exaggeration, but even he seems deeply concerned. Our correspondent Leo Cendrowicz attended the meeting, and to read his story, visit the MRI Digital Community or click here.

Another area of great uncertainty at present is mammography, and European Society of Breast Imaging (EUSOBI) has responded by publishing a training article that provides basic information and facts. This document will prove useful for patients and any nonspecialist medic. Click here to learn more.

The actress Kate Winslet is probably not short of work, but our history columnist Dr. Adrian Thomas is convinced she's the ideal person to play Dr. Florence Stoney, the U.K.'s first female radiologist. To read about this amazing woman, click here.

Medica is a major event for the medical device industry, and a new 3D x-ray imaging system will be on display next week in Düsseldorf, Germany. Reportedly, the new system can provide crucial images for complicated surgical procedures. Visit our Advanced Visualization Digital Community for more details or click here.

The RSNA meeting begins in Chicago on 27 November, and a huge European presence is anticipated. To help attendees prepare, our sister site, AuntMinnie.com, is publishing a series of previews this month in its Road to RSNA special section. For European Society of Radiology (ESR) members who subscribed to AuntMinnieEurope.com during September, we ran a prize draw for a swanky Apple iPad 2. The lucky winner is Dr. Katharina Bider, who works at IMAMED Radiologie Nordwest in Basel, Switzerland. Click here for our report.
