WFUMB preview; congenital heart disease; 50% dose reduction in CR

Dear AuntMinnieEurope Member,

The congress season is about to enter full swing once again. In less than three weeks, the European Society of Cardiology's annual meeting begins in Paris. A day earlier, on 26 August, the World Congress of Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (WFUMB) starts in Vienna. We will bring you news from both these important meetings, and as a curtain-raiser, we interviewed Dr. Gerhard Mostbeck about his hopes and plans for the WFUMB conference. Click here to read more.

Over the summer, there has been no letup in the number of studies published in the literature, and we continue to alert you to the key papers.

Three recent studies are worth close scrutiny. First, in European Radiology, German researchers have found that catheterization procedures performed with flat-detector CT offer high-resolution images that can improve the diagnosis of congenital heart disease in children. For the details, click here.

Second, in the European Journal of Radiology, authors from Austria state that changing a new type of computed radiography imaging plate can deliver higher image quality and allow for a 50% radiation dose reduction in supine chest x-rays compared with standard plates. Visit our Digital X-Ray Community, or click here for the full story.

Third, a study in Osteoporosis International of more than 1,000 cancer patients living in the Baden-Württemberg state of Germany has concluded that it is economically prudent and clinically justified to perform a dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry exam. Click here for the report.

Our article last week about what clinicians want from radiology reports has brought a strong reaction. One reader stresses that patient management relies on bilateral understanding, and radiologists require better information on request cards. To follow and join the debate, visit our Forums.

We have now posted a second translated article. Read about new developments in PET-MRI in French, Italian, and Spanish. If you have colleagues who prefer reading in their native language, please tell them about this service.
