Radiation therapy developer Varian Medical Systems of Palo Alto, CA, announced the completion of treatment for the first patient in France using its RapidArc intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) system.
A 60-year-old patient with prostate cancer was treated at the CRLC Val D'Aurelle - Paul Larmarque cancer center in Montepellier. The IMRT treatments with the RapidArc system required only 75 seconds, compared to 12-14 minutes with conventional IMRT, according to Varian. The faster treatment times help improve precision by reducing the time for anatomical structures to move, a problem in treating tumors in the pelvic region.
The RapidArc system targets radiation beams at a tumor while making one continuous rotation around the patient, delivering optimal treatment dose to the tumor while sparing normal surrounding tissue.
