The American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) of Fairfax, VA, is $1 million closer to achieving its goal of raising $10 million to establish the Radiation Oncology Institute thanks to a pledge from radiation therapy provider Elekta of Stockholm, Sweden.
ASTRO in August 2008 announced its plans to establish and fund the Radiation Oncology Institute to support outcomes research and education on radiation oncology. It is intended to be the philanthropic partner of ASTRO.
Following ASTRO's initial commitment of $5 million, of which $3 million is a challenge grant to ASTRO members, individual radiation therapists have pledged more than $1 million.
Radiation therapy firm Varian Medical Systems of Palo Alto, CA, is the largest corporate donor to date, having pledged $2 million for the institute's establishment.
