PET developer Naviscan of San Diego is touting the results of a prospective study published in the European Journal of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging that concluded that positron emission mammography (PEM) and breast MRI had comparably high efficacy in detecting cancerous lesions.
Researchers at Boca Raton Regional Hospital in Boca Raton, FL, enrolled 182 women with recent biopsy-proven primary breast cancer. They found that PEM was not affected by menopausal status, breast density, or hormone replacement therapy.
Results from a separate clinical study sponsored by the U.S. National Institutes of Health, recently presented at the annual SNM meeting in June, also compared PEM and breast MRI.
In the multisite study, PEM demonstrated a 6% improvement in specificity and the ability to differentiate between malignant and benign lesions, suggesting that PEM may reduce unnecessary biopsies. The study is scheduled for publication in the December issue of the journal Radiology.
