Indian radiologists demand justice for murdered trainee doctor

Radiologists across India observed a strike on 17 August to demand justice for a 31-year-old medical resident at R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata who was raped and murdered on 9 August, according to a Times of India report.

The strike was organized by the Indian Radiological and Imaging Association (IRIA) and was held for 24 hours starting at 6 a.m. local time. IRIA urged members to participate in the protest and seek media coverage of it to "highlight the gravity of the situation," the Times reported, noting that IRIA stressed that the strike was "not just an expression of anger but also a call to action to improve safety measures for healthcare workers."

The Associated Press reported that the police's discovery of the woman prompted "scores of people … to rampage at a medical college campus in eastern India, attacking vehicles and ransacking patient wards."
