The U.K. Commission on Human Medicines will take up the case for independent prescribing by diagnostic radiographers at its December meeting, suggesting that this issue is attracting greater attention.

Currently, radiographers hold legal entitlement to train as supplementary prescribers following the same education and training pathway as for independent prescribing, but with different legal rights on qualification, according to a news release from the Society of Radiographers (SoR) on 17 November.

Leveling the legal playing field will help radiographers support safe access to medicines when scanning in community diagnostic centers and increasingly in acute National Health Service (NHS) trusts where radiologists or other medical staff are less available, the SoR said.
