Wacker is director of the Institute for Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology at Hannover Medical School. His international experience includes clinical work in the U.S. at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, and at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. Wacker is also currently president-elect (2027-2029) of the German Roentgen Society (DRG).

His goals for his term include integrating interventional radiology (IR) into continuing education regulations, engaging young radiologists in IR at an early stage, and strengthening the appreciation of the field among not only professionals but also the public.

IR will play an even greater role within radiology as a whole in the near future as image-guided therapies using modalities such as CT, angiography, ultrasound, and MRI continue to grow, and as AI will increasingly support interventional procedures, according to Wacker.

"We are facing a surge in innovation that we can actively shape," he said in a statement released by the DRG.

Wacker's appointment became effective on 29 May. He succeeded Prof. Dr. Philipp Paprottka.
