On World Stroke Day, 29 October, the Spanish Society of Medical Radiology (SERAM) has highlighted the importance of the neuroradiologist in emergency care and stroke management.
Dr. José Luis Díaz Valiño, a neuroradiologist at SERAM and member of the Society of the Spanish Interventional Neuroradiology Group (GENI), stated that while mortality and incidence of stroke have decreased in recent years, population aging with the increase in life expectancy will cause these numbers to rise again.
The multidisciplinary team that handles Code Stroke emergencies is one example of advanced collaborative medicine that SERAM highlighted. It is made up of emergency services, neurology, anesthesia, intensive care unit, neurosurgery, rehabilitation, and neuroradiology.
Neuroradiology covers diagnosis with CT and MRI images as well as the treatment of ischemic pathologies and hemorrhagic pathologies by means of vascular catheterizations, which are essential in stroke care, SERAM noted.
