The Australian Society of Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy (ASMIRT) has launched a video series to educate young people about medical radiation science careers.
ASMIRT President Carolyn Heyes said that the videos feature young practitioners and are hoped to encourage more young people to choose a career in the field. She says addressing staff shortages is vital.
“Staff shortages mean people are waiting longer for imaging, which means a longer wait for diagnosis. We urgently need to invest in increasing the number of radiographers and other medical radiation practitioners in Australia,” Heyes said.
According to the Australian Government’s official Occupation Shortage List, the nation is experiencing radiographer, radiation therapist, and nuclear medicine technologist shortages in most states and territories.
The videos, “Being a Radiographer” and “Being a Radiation Therapist,” are available on YouTube, with a third on a career as a nuclear medicine technologist in production, the ASMIRT said.
