German group moves ahead with VR training on radiation safety

The Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) in Germany has developed a virtual reality (VR) application for training courses on medical radiation protection. It is being supported actively by the German Radiological Society (DRG).

The application helps users practice the correct handling of imaging components to better protect patients and staff, the DRG explained in a statement. It simulates ionizing, high-energy radiation as it occurs under real conditions in a cardiac catheter lab and calculates the effective dose that those in the procedure room are exposed to.

The DRG plans to demonstrate the application as part of its FFF Technik Experimental event that is being held 25 to 26 October in Remscheid-Lennep, which is Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen's birthplace, it said.
