CARS prepares to celebrate 40th anniversary in Berlin

Computer Assisted Radiology and Surgery (CARS) will be marking its 40th anniversary when it holds its International Congress and Exhibition in Berlin from 17 to 20 June.

The upcoming congress will be held at the historic Langenbeck-Virchow-Haus, also known as “the House of Medicine.” The CARS 2025 congress also marks the 20th anniversary of the International Journal of CARS, the organizers said.

Applications of model-guided medicine (MGM) in radiology and surgery will be emphasized in interdisciplinary workshops at CARS 2025, noted Prof. Heinz Lemke, PhD, organizer of CARS since its inception.

According to Lemke, the seven themes explored in the first CARS meeting in 1985 are even more relevant to the medical R&D community now: digital image generation, application programming, computer vision, computer graphics, modeling, human-to-computer interaction, and picture archiving and communications systems.

Whereas in 1985 the application of computers was limited to radiology and surgery, these areas of medical and imaging informatics have extended to pathology as well in recent years, he added.

This year’s congress will include sessions on the following topics:

  • Methods and tools for situational models, process models, and network models for distributed AI model services in health care.
  • Multicenter AI models and associated clinical translational studies.
  • Model truthfulness and transparency studies.
  • Medical Information and Model Management Systems (MIMMS) and Artificial Intelligence Management Systems (AIMS).
  • Model curation via intelligent handling of data, information, knowledge, models, and handling of truth.
  • Model quality assurance, i.e., model verification, validation, and evaluation.

In addition, Lemke has offered a summary of the previous 40 years of CARS, with thoughts about its future.
