Hyperthermia and ablation system developer BSD Medical is highlighting the opening of a new German center for the treatment of pediatric tumors with hyperthermia and chemotherapy.
The center is a collaboration between the Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin and the Charité department of radiation oncology. It was opened as a result of a study conducted by UMS Dusseldorf researchers on the use of hyperthermia -- delivered using the BSD-2000 hyperthermia system -- combined with chemotherapy and tumor resection to treat malignant germ cell tumors in children and adolescents, according to BSD Medical.
The study found an objective tumor reduction in 86% of patients, with a five-year overall survival rate of 72% (Wessalowski et al, Lancet Oncology, 14 August 2013).
This is the second center that has opened in Germany dedicated to the treatment of pediatric tumors using hyperthermia and chemotherapy, BSD Medical said.
