Oxford signs deal to develop new imaging tech

Isis Innovation, Oxford University's technology transfer arm, has signed a deal with a Canadian nonprofit corporation to advance the development of a new ultrasound-based imaging technology.

Isis is seeking to commercialize Oxford electromagnetic acoustic (OxEMA) technology, which is a combination of electromagnetic and acoustic waves that creates medical images. Isis believes OxEMA could produce images of greater clarity and with better ability to characterize tissue.

The modality could offer users information comparable to MRI, but at a cost similar to ultrasound, and could be a boon to areas that lack access to MRI. It could prove particularly beneficial in clinical applications like prostate and liver cancer.

To help advance the technology, Isis on 4 September announced a partnership with the Centre for Imaging Technology Commercialization (CIMTEC) of Canada, a nonprofit corporation supported by the Canadian government. Further work will be handled by a new startup firm, Enhanced Medical, headed by CEO Amol Karnick.
