Radiation therapy firm Varian Medical Systems said it will be supplying its stereotactic radiotherapy systems, linear accelerators, software, and ancillary equipment to five hospitals in Scotland.
The sale of eight TrueBeam treatment systems and two Clinac iX linear accelerators is part of a major nationwide procurement to replace aging equipment in radiotherapy departments, according to Varian. The project, which is funded by the Scottish Executive, will replace almost half of the inventory of cancer treatment systems in Scotland, and will include construction and other third-party expenditures.
An estimated 30% of the hospitals' cancer patients prescribed for radiotherapy treatments are expected to receive RapidArc intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) treatments within 12 to 18 months, according to Gary Currie, PhD, medical physicist at West of Scotland Cancer Centre in Glasgow.
The other hospitals to receive the new equipment include Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, Western General Hospital in Edinburgh, and Raigmore Hospital in Inverness.
