Week in Review: To shield or not to shield? | Update on breast MRI | Morozov reflects on move from Moscow

Dear AuntMinnieEurope Member,

The debate over radiation shielding has been bubbling away for a couple of years now, but it seems to have gathered pace and become more intense over recent months. Our news report about the "pros and cons" session on this topic was the fourth most viewed article in July's coverage of ECR 2022, which surprised us.

As a follow-up, we recorded a short video interview with Jonathan McNulty, PhD, who was the inaugural winner of the Most Influential Radiographer award in the EuroMinnies 2022. You can view it in the CT Community.

What's the impact of metallic markers on the accuracy and interpretation of breast MRI scans? Swiss researchers have investigated this important -- but rarely studied -- question. Although their sample size was relatively small and they only studied two different types of markers, their results and analysis deserve a close look.

Also in our Women's Imaging Community, you can read about how a French team used MRI with an ultrafast dynamic contrast-enhanced protocol to predict a complete pathologic response to breast cancer treatment. The group found that by measuring the slope between the time of contrast inflow onset and the time of peak intensity in breast tumors, known as the wash-in slope, clinicians can predict how tumors respond to neoadjuvant therapy with high sensitivity.

Dr. Sergey Morozov, PhD, has had a turbulent time since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, but during our video interview at ECR 2022, I witnessed firsthand just how resilient and adaptable he is. He appears to have coped remarkably well and is excited by his new life and career.

Also at the Vienna congress, we caught up with Dr. Uliana Pidvalna, PhD, from Lviv to find out how medical training is being organized in Ukraine. Our discussion shows how the conflict has had a huge impact on every aspect of life in the country.
