Artificial intelligence (AI) will have a particularly profound effect on the working lives of younger radiologists, so what does Dr. Merel Huisman, PhD, winner of the 2021 EuroMinnies award for Radiology Rising Star, make of AI? She also shares her views on burnout, social media, and the value of epidemiology know-how.
Huisman is a final-year radiology resident at University Medical Center Utrecht in the Netherlands, with a subspecialty interest in cardiothoracic imaging, musculoskeletal imaging, and AI. She is a board member of the European Society of Medical Imaging Informatics (EuSoMII), chair and founder of the EuSoMII Young Club, and a member of the RSNA's Radiology: Artificial Intelligence Trainee Editorial Board.
In our video interview, Huisman speaks about the large global survey of radiologists and trainees she has conducted with Dr. Martin Willemink, PhD. Part 1 was published on 20 March in European Radiology. She also describes how the COVID-19 pandemic has changed her daily routine, how she copes with stress, and how she uses Twitter and other forums.
Further interviews with the winners of the 2021 EuroMinnies awards will follow during the second half of April. Now in its third year, the scheme is an annual event recognizing excellence in radiology. Candidates are nominated by AuntMinnieEurope.com members, with winners selected by an expert panel in two rounds of voting. A full list of winners in the 2021 edition of the Minnies is available on AuntMinnieEurope.com.
