Royal Philips, the parent company of Philips Healthcare, has received funding from the European Union's (EU) Horizon 2020 program to pilot big data solutions to improve patient outcomes at a lower cost.
The three-year BigMedilytics program aims to improve patient outcomes and increase productivity by applying artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to datasets across the data value chain, according to Philips. This includes data from patients, healthcare providers, health insurers, and medical technology providers.
The program seeks to break down the barriers between traditional healthcare silos and combine data sources to gain new insights. The firm will ensure the security and privacy of personal data are protected and managed within national and EU regulatory frameworks.
Funding is shared across 35 partners in 12 countries and involves more than 11 million patients. The project will be divided into three areas: Population health and chronic disease management, oncology, and the industrialization of healthcare. The program will also implement pilots from prevention to diagnosis, and treatment to home care. Partners in the program include healthcare providers, technology companies, insurers, pharma, research institutes, and universities.
