Siemens Healthcare has completed installation of a Magnetom 7-tesla MRI unit at the University of Oxford Centre for Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the Brain.
This is Siemens' first 7-tesla whole-body actively-shielded MRI system to be installed in Europe and the U.K., the company reported. Siemens also recently installed a Magnetom Verio 3-tesla MRI system at the University of Oxford's Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences.
The 7-tesla unit will be used in research programs to improve understanding of the nervous system in health and disease. It initially will be used for imaging the structure and function of the brain to better understand the healthy human brain and the mechanisms underpinning key diseases of the central nervous system. These diseases include stroke, epilepsy, chronic pain, and neurodegeneration.
The university's department of cardiovascular medicine will be using the system, along with spectroscopy, to study the heart, Siemens reported.
