In a surprise development, Prof. Bernd Hamm will remain as chair of radiology and managing director of Charité Centrum 6 in Berlin for at least another two years, according to an announcement on Friday 13 January.

Hamm was president of ECR in 2015 and 2018, and along with Prof. Albert Baert from Belgium (1993 and 1995), he is the only person to preside over the ECR twice. Hamm was widely expected to retire in 2023 but has had a change of heart.

"With the decision to extend Prof. Hamm's contract, the Charité Board has opted for continuity at the top of one of Europe's largest departments of radiology," the statement read.

"The decision is supported by the department's staff, who make a strong team. Together, this team can tackle the challenges lying ahead in patient care, research, and academic teaching and make sure that it will continue to play a leading role in radiology. Everyone in the department is looking forward to being part of this endeavor," it added.

Hamm became chair of radiology at Charité Campus Mitte in 1994. He managed the mergers with the department of radiology at Campus Virchow-Klinikum in 2006 and with the department of radiology at Campus Benjamin Franklin in 2010.

In 2006, Hamm was appointed managing director of Charité Centrum 6, which includes diagnostic and interventional radiology, neuroradiology, pediatric radiology, nuclear medicine, and medical physics. He has budget responsibility for these areas at Charité.

Hamm was chair of the board of the European Society of Radiology from 2018 to 2019.
