Google honored Marie Curie's 144th birthday on its home page today. The famous scientist is known for her pioneering research on radioactivity, a term she coined. She isolated radioactive isotopes and discovered the elements polonium and radium. She also developed methods for the separation of radium from radioactive residues, which allowed for the study of its therapeutic properties, according to her biography on the Nobel Prize website.

Curie won two Nobel prizes in physics and chemistry for her work and she was the first woman to do so. She died in 1934 of aplastic anemia due to her lifelong exposure to radiation.
