The Charité - Universitätsmedizin in Berlin has completed the installation of a magnetic particle imaging (MPI) system in cooperation partner with the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt in Braunschweig.
MPI technology relies on the detection of the magnetic properties of iron-oxide nanoparticles injected into the bloodstream to produce 3D images, and it produces high sensitivity and also high spatial and temporal resolution in the body, according to an article on the German Radiological Society (DRG) website.
The opening of the new machine was attended by the Federal Minister Dr. Johanna Wanka of the German Research Foundation MPI. A year ago, the world's first MPI scanner was opened at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf.
