The Ashmolean Museum of the University of Oxford in the U.K. is hosting a public seminar on the theme of the human heart on 26 November that will cover the progress being made in medical imaging.
Curated by Jim Harris, PhD, art historian and teaching curator from the Ashmolean University Engagement Project, and Dr. Robin Choudhury, professor of cardiovascular medicine at Oxford University, the "Seeing the Human Heart" seminar will include academics who will contribute to discussions ranging from conceptions of the medieval heart in literature and philosophy to the living heart in health.
The seminar is being funded in part by a $1.1 million (820,000 euros) grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, awarded in 2012 to the museum's University Engagement Program, which seeks to expand the use of the Ashmolean's collections in university teaching.
This seminar follows another that was offered in May, also centered on the heart, which gave participants the opportunity to examine objects ranging from ancient Egyptian heart scarabs to illuminated medieval manuscript leaves, carved Mughal gems, and sixteenth century Italian drawings.
