BMJ posts updated NICE guidelines

BMJ has published updated recommendations from the U.K. National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) on the classification and care of people at risk of familial breast cancer (BMJ, 25 June 2013).

The new guidelines update former recommendations published in 2004 and 2006, and include these categories:

  • Information and support for patients
  • Initial assessment in primary care for people without a personal history of breast cancer
  • Identification of gene carriers for people with or without a personal history of breast cancer
  • Breast cancer surveillance
  • Risk reduction strategies for women with no personal history of breast cancer
  • Risk reduction strategies for all women with a family history of breast cancer
  • Overcoming barriers
