Bruker launches nondestructive x-ray 3D microscope

Scientific instrument company Bruker announced the availability of SkyScan 1272, a high-resolution x-ray micro-CT system for visualizing object details as small as 0.35 microns (µm).

The system can visualize up to 200-megapixel (MP) virtual slices through objects. More than 2,600 slices can be reconstructed after a single CT data acquisition scan, using new 16- or 11-MP x-ray detectors in up to three offset positions. Object details as small as 0.35 µm can be detected using advanced phase-contrast enhancement technology, according to the Kontich, Belgium-headquartered company.

With automatically adjusted acquisition geometry, the SkyScan 1272 delivers scans several times faster than micro-CT systems with a fixed-source detector design. Large format imaging is enabled by multithreaded, graphics processing unit (GPU)-accelerated 3D reconstruction and realistic visualization by surface and volume rendering. A built-in precision micropositioning stage provides highly accurate sample control.

An optional 16-position automatic sample changer delivers high throughput and enables additional or replacement of samples without interrupting live x-ray scans in progress. For individual samples, automatic magnification adjustment and optimization of scanning protocols are available. The system can automatically distribute results via email, and econstruction results can be sent to an iPad. For mobile platforms, special software can perform volume rendering and virtual slicing of objects with touchscreen controls.

Bruker's complete range of software for 2D/3D quantitative analysis and realistic 3D visualization is supplied as standard with the SkyScan 1272.
