Radiation therapy firm Varian Medical Systems of Palo Alto, CA, has installed its RapidArc-equipped Clinac iX linear accelerator at Queen Giovanna University Hospital in Sofia, Bulgaria, to replace an existing cobalt machine installed in 1964, the company announced.
Two cervical cancer patients were the first people in Bulgaria treated with the new system, which enables image-guided intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT). This treatment permits faster throughput and more advanced treatment options, according to Varian.
The new Varian linac replaced an existing cobalt machine installed at the hospital in 1964, is only the fourth of its kind in the country and by far the most modern, hospital staff noted.
The advanced RapidArc system delivers precise image-guided IMRT up to four times faster than conventional IMRT, Varian said. The speed makes procedures easier and more comfortable for patients, and has also been shown to permit greater precision since there is a reduced chance for patient movement.
