Swedish radiation therapy firm Elekta has introduced a new member of its Leksell Gamma Knife family, Perfexion.
Perfexion is a stereotactic radiosurgery system designed to make Gamma Knife surgery available to more patients by increasing the treatable volume of cancerous tissue. The company estimates that the change increases by 40% the number of patients who can be treated with the system.
Elekta claims that Perfexion delivers a sharply lower body radiation dose to patients compared to competing technologies, and room radiation doses are low enough to allow for the incorporation of a window into the treatment room. The treatment room itself can be a normal-sized hospital room, which will result in lower siting costs, the company said.
The system has an automated and single-push-button approach that is expected to save three to six working weeks of physician time per year at an average Gamma Knife center, the company said. Perfexion also comes with Leksell GammaPlan PFX, a new client-based treatment planning system.
