Radiation oncology firm Nucletron of Veenendaal, Netherlands, and women's health firm Advanced Radiation Therapy (ART) of Billerica, MA, have landed the first contract to install an AccuBoost breast brachytherapy system in Europe.
The AccuBoost system will be installed at Istituto Europeo di Oncologia in Milan, Italy, the first European site to receive the product after it won CE Mark clearance in January.
AccuBoost is placed under image guidance and uses high-dose-rate brachytherapy to help localize and treat a lumpectomy site and protect a patient's healthy organs. The unit is powered by a Nucletron radiation therapy system, which targets the beam of radiation directly at the tumor bed and away from the chest, improving patient outcomes and reducing radiation dose to the lungs and heart to less than 10% of the prescription dose, according to the companies.
